Review by Colin Phipps

screenshot Probably the most unusual feature of this level is how spacious it is: there are a number of large rooms and courtyards, but each has at most one fight in it. I only took 15 minutes to play through the level, despite all the huge areas I passed through. That's not to say the level is boring though - the first big outdoor area has a really good fight, with cacodemons floating in through the windows into your building.

I've been reviewing long enough to know what my own preferences are, and so I know this isn't my favoured style of level. I liked the starting fight, where you need quick reactions to beat a group of shotgun men. But after that, the level is dominated by the heavyweight enemies, although you don't get any heavy weapons until nearer the end of the level. There is some opportunity t get them fighting each other, and some of the nastier traps can be escaped by fast running :-).

There is a good style to the level, with stone and brick buildings separated by acid rivers, crossed by metal bridges. Beware, you can get stuck in some of the rivers - normally I wouldn't mind this much, but you do have to enter a river at one point to reach the next area. So don't jump in rivers... except when you have to :-\. Deep acid and current effects from Boom are used to make the acid more realistic.

There are some nasty fights to survive, particularly the end fight. You enter a small room, and a cube spawner starts spawning monsters all around while the door locks behind you. You have to release a switch, and then hold on for another minute while the head is crushed - except I didn't knwo that first time, so I wasted time blasting walls trying to find the head. Once you get the idea, it's easy just to survive, since you get give loads of cells beforehand.

The level is pretty linear, but there are a couple of (easy) secrets to find. This level isn't really my cup of tea, but the only serious flaws are the linearity and inescapable rivers, so if you like this sort of thing, play it.
