screenshot This is one of the KBOOM series of WADs made by Kurt Kesler specifically for the Boom engine. There are lots of Boom specific features, including some excellent deep rivers & lakes; these are not just for show either, as they are important to the level progression.

The architecture is very impressive; the outdoor areas have some very interesting & detailed designs. For example the waterfall shown above, with a continuous stream of bodies falling down it (the picture isn't that good, that is a marine corpse falling)!

Indoors the areas are excellent too; there are some very good subtle lighting effects, which give a very natural feel to the lighting. These contribute to an excellent atmosphere.

Fighting through this level is great fun. The range of fights is excellent, particularly the way different types of monsters are mixed in the traps. Some of the traps are a bit easy to spot, but there is always enough trickery involved that this doesn't spoil them. Ammo and health are well judged, so the player has to worry about keeping his ammo balanced, but without any serious ammo problems.

My only serious complaint about the level is the cyberdemon - he stands almost on top of one of the keys. There is a pile of cells and a BFG specifically for fighting him if you like, but why have a cyberdemon if only to blow a few BFG shots into him? Alternatively you can grap the key, and use the Megasphere nearby to negate the unavoidable health loss.

This is an excellent level. The superb fights, architecture and lighting effects, combined with the excellent Boom special effects, make this a really great WAD to play. Everyone should play it!
