KBOOM_8 is yet another of the excellent base-style wads from Kurt Kesler's KBOOM series. Actually this is quit a short one by the standard of others in the series, but that's just because he packed the detail in even tighter than ever.

screenshot The architecture at this level is amazing - there is deep water, over and under bridges, all mixed together without any problems. Some areas are so complicated that even my relatively new computer began to slow down a little. There aren't many levels which have anything like this much detail. You have to see it to believe it. Needless to say, the texturing and lighting is all great too.

OTOH, some of these effects are a bit obvious; you hear the platforms moving to support all these bridges, and occasionally you see shots stopping in midair under the bridges. It only affected the gameplay in a couple of places, but it does detract from the realism a bit.

The level is fairly short, and mosty the fights are not too hard; early on the level has mainly basic enemies. But don't get lulled into a false sense of security, because there are a couple of really nasty fights that can easily catch you unawares. There was a particularly nasty one at the end, which I am proud to have nearly survived first time :-).

What can I say? KK wrote it, so why read this, just get it!
