There have been quite a few levels released lately for Ultimate Doom, and one of them is SPOOKY04. As you'd expect from the name, it's a dark, spooky level throughout, but don't worry not dark. There are new graphics imported, in particular some rock textures which are good, fitting the style of the level much better than the normal Doom 1 rock textures would. There is good detail like torches, lighting and decorations which make the areas interesting.
The level was a fairly open feel, with lots of windows between areas, and a non-linear route through the level. However the player's movements are usually quite cramped; there are quite a few fights against barons in short corridors, for instance, where you have to run past the baron to get space to move. Also, the corridors might not be that dark, but they make perfect camoflage for spectres, I found I could hardly see them unless I was actually firing.
The level progression is good, with keys and switches used, and it was always clear where to go next. There are some good tricks and traps, but not many, mostly it is the normal fights which are tricky. Health and ammo are limited, pretty well judged throughout I'd say.
Overall, a good hard level, with some really good fights and a good atmosphere. I really like the Doom 1 style, and having authors bringing the quality of recent map-making to the old style is great IMHO.
