Review by Colin Phipps

TANTRUM is a medium-sized bricks'n'metal style level for Doom 2. The level progression is simple, but be prepared for some nasty surprises: there are some nasty little traps scattered around, and some archvilles too. All of the traps are very fair though.

The architecture sticks closely to its theme; most of the level is covered with the light brown stone texture, with rusty metal beams and bars for decoration. I thought the textures could have been much more varied, since most of the rooms had only these brown textures. OTOH this does give the level some atmosphere; combined with the excellent lighting arrangements this gives TANTRUM a good "sunset feel".

The gameplay was unusual. The level has a lot of tough enemies mixed in throughout, and good architecture is used to make the fights much more interesting. Health is very limited early on, but there is plenty of ammo; many of the fights are designed so you can get the monsters fighting each other, so think before you shoot. Later on the level becomes easier with more ammo and some health too (especially if you find a secret or two).

Overall, this is an interesting level with some good fights and architecture, even if it isn't too difficult. My only major complaints are the simple level progression and the overall 'brownness' of the level.
