Review by Colin Phipps

"The Great Wave" is a not too large level for Doom 2. The architecture is pretty simple, plain rooms without a lot of detail, but the lighting is well judged and there is some atmosphere. There is a little decoration but not much.

The real quality of this level is the fights though. There is a lot of use of teleports to make the fights more complicated and interesting. Not just the usual monsters teleporting in behind you. For instance, in one place you have to fight a horde of monsters, a mixture of spectres and shooting monsters, with a teleport between you and them. You have to pick off the shooting enemies while drawing the spectres nito the teleport, otherwise you'll be overwhemled. The weapons are given sensibly and you have to choose your weapon carefully. Getting the monsters fighting each other helps a lot too.

The level progression is fairly simple, and there are secrets (though some showed on the map). There is some music from Doom 1 imported to fit the feel of the level too. It's a tricky level, not too long, worth a look I think.
