screenshot "TRIDENT" is a small hellish level for Doom 2. It takes its name from the distinctive trident pattern that is used throughout, both as decoration and the shape of the map itself; this gives the level a good strong style. The play of the level consists of fighting each of the 3 prongs of the main trident in turn, then the final battle at the exit.

The architecture is good, with some stark lighting effects, and nice features like acid fountains, burning barrels, etc. One slight oddity was that cage bars were used in several places, but were all walk-through; maybe this was intended as a secret, or to catch the player out (monsters walked through them in one trap, but it semed odd to me.

The level may be small, but you get some good fights. There is limited ammo early on, making for some very interesting fights as you run past enemies to go for ammo. Fighting in the side prongs of the trident darkness added a new dimension to the fights, as you had to fire at shadows mostly. There is a good mix of monsters throughout, and a couple of tricky traps too. The level progression was nice for a level of this size, and there are plenty of secrets to go for as well.

What more could you ask for, except maybe the level being longer so we could have more fun?
